<span style="font-family: "Cambria",serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">I hope everyone is rested, spent
time with family and vacationed hard!

<span style="font-family: "Cambria",serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">The beginning of this school year
for 2022-2023 will begin with spectacular news on the academic standing of
Tidehaven ISD. Tidehaven is the
strongest academic school district in Matagorda County. We will be sharing lots of this good news
during convocation at the in-service training in August.

<span style="font-family: "Cambria",serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">Pay raise for all employees: The
Tidehaven ISD Board of Trustees approved the yearly step for all employees plus
a 3% raise for every employee in the district.
The Board of Trustees has been very strong and generous in their support
of all employees, and they will be present on Friday, August 5, 2022 for the
School Board Appreciation Luncheon.

<span style="font-family: "Cambria",serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">Tidehaven will begin the school
year with an enrollment of more than 1,000 students district wide. I remember when we passed the bond in 2012,
the school district had approximately 740 students. The cause of our growth in enrollment
initially was the new facilities. What
has generated the growth in enrollment since basically 2017 has been the positive
culture and high expectations that Tidehaven has created. We are strong academically, we have high
expectations of ourselves and also our students.

<span style="font-family: "Cambria",serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">New teachers join our staff each
year and the feedback we receive is this: 1) They feel supported, empowered and
in control of their classrooms, and 2) They feel rejuvenated because of the
strong supports we have in place for academics, behavior and success, 3) They
feel welcomed by fellow teachers and administrators. Tidehaven ISD is truly a very special place
to work.

<span style="font-family: "Cambria",serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">The greatest treasure Tidehaven
ISD possesses is our children. The
greatest resource Tidehaven ISD possesses is the employees. Every single employee plays a part in our combined
successes. Together we accomplish so
much more than we do as individuals.

After coming through summer heat, it is so nice to have cooler nights and cooler days. November brings football playoffs and I want to congratulate the Tidehaven Tiger football team and the entire coaching staff for making it to the playoffs again. It is great to see the fans in the stadium supporting the football team, the cheerleaders and the band when so many students are engaged in one Friday night activity.

From time to time, Tidehaven publishes a "brag list" where all employees are encouraged to participate. It is so easy to look around you and see the many great things that are happening. We brag on employees, teams, clubs, organizations and students.

Tidehaven has returned to face-to-face instruction as of Monday, October 19, 2020. It is so good to see all the students back at school again. I remember vividly to March of 2020, Tidehaven was on spring break and we were anticipating coming back to school on Monday morning when Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the statewide closing of all public schools in order to combat the spread of Covid 19 and "flatten the curve." We had no idea at the time that school would be closed for the remainder of the year and that we would not have our students with us for March, April and May. Tidehaven began the school year with 30% of our students and families choosing online instruction. By the time we made the decision to return to face to face, that number had dropped to 10%. The disinfection program we have running in our school district has been quite successful and that is a compliment to every teacher, aide, custodian, maintenance, administrators, and just everyone who has helped us fight Covid 19.

The high school marching band is about to go to UIL Regional Marching Contest which was delayed a few weeks. I know that the band directors, students and parents have been very busy working on this year's marching show music since two-a-days began in August. Good luck to the marching band at contest.

The Ag and 4H students have started on their spring ag projects. The pigs have arrived and are in the pig barn. I really enjoying going to see them during the week. I enjoy watching the process of the students learning responsibility and raising their ag projects to show in the spring.

November brings Thanksgiving and so we encourage you to enjoy this time with family and friends. Enjoy your favorite desserts and even get a second helping because you deserve it!

For the kids,

Andrew Seigrist

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8295647426381962810.post-10991571233946390282020-08-17T07:11:00.000-07:002020-08-17T07:11:19.519-07:00Welcome back to school!
August 17, 2020

Welcome back to school!

The beginning of the 2020 school year is filled with anxiety about all things related to Covid 19. At Tidehaven ISD, we want to reassure our students, parents, and community members that we have a well-reasoned, well-thought out process for returning to school while simultaneously improving our efforts to keep the Covid 19 virus out of our schools.

Our hearts desire is to educate our students and to enable them to become productive citizens of our community and across America. The first thing we want to accomplish is restore a sense of normalcy to the lives of our students. Many of our students may feel out of control of the Covid 19 situation. So, we are restoring that sense of control by opening our school doors and welcoming everyone back to what we do best, having school.

Just last week, I had the opportunity to visit with a parent who had concerns for school being open and possible Covid 19 situations. I assured him that we were following all Texas Education Agency protocols and then I asked him if he was aware of our disinfecting procedures. He mentioned that he was not aware so I shared the following with him. 1) Our campuses are disinfected daily. 2) Our classrooms are disinfected between student groups. That means at the HS/JH, that the teacher is disinfecting all non-porous surfaces such as desktops and table tops at the end of every single class period...that's seven times a day. For our elementary campuses, non-porous surfaces like desktops and table tops are disinfected between student groups. For our students coming to school is very safe in view of how often the school is disinfected. Where else can the students go on a regular and routine basis that is disinfected seven times every day Monday-Friday? 3) The school district is following Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order GA 29 in wearing of masks, even on school buses. 4) Students are spread apart while eating breakfast and lunch.

It is our hope and desire to try and restore a sense of normalcy to the lives of our students. We have been five long months without our students and we are so very glad to have them back.

Don't be afraid. I often think of the famous words of Franklin D. Roosevelt at the beginning of America's involvement in World War 2..."We have nothing to fear, but fear itself".

Welcome back to school!

For the kids,

Andrew Seigrist

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8295647426381962810.post-61469160433316904542020-02-04T12:44:00.002-08:002020-02-04T12:44:11.617-08:00Message from the Superintendent, February 4, 2020Message from the Superintendent
I love Monday mornings!

Baseball and softball seasons have officially started. Maintenance and grounds personnel have been working since the beginning of July to prepare the fields for play. The fields have been updated and given lots of attention resulting in a rich, deep, dark green playing field. Basketball season is winding down and spring sports are gearing up. Let's play ball!

The Matagorda County Fair is scheduled for the first weekend in March. Livestock projects are getting bigger every single day. Ag. Mechanics projects, livestock projects and other fair projects all are approaching the big day and finishing touches are evident everywhere.

The HS and JH choir students recently competed in the UIL Solo and Ensemble competition. The choir took more than 20 students to contest and competed very well winning several Superior and Excellent ratings for their efforts. HS and JH Robotics teams also recently competed and did very well. Power lifting competed in Palacios with our teams placing 2nd and 3rd in the competition.

I love Monday mornings! I realize that may sound strange to many people but I do, I truly do. Don't get me wrong, I need the weekend to recharge my batteries just like everyone else, but Sunday evening, I'm already thinking towards Monday morning. That means, early on Monday morning, I will have the opportunity to go to campuses, greet students, and encourage them. I love my job! I get to encourage someone every single day not just on Monday. This is a professional and personal choice that I have made, namely to encourage someone every single day. In order to do this, I have to keep my mind sharp and focused on the positive things around me, celebrating every single success no matter how small. I've learned in my life, that when I focus on being grateful and appreciate everything around me...it gives me the focus and mindset to encourage those around me.

Call to Action: Make it a point to encourage two people today. Look for the opportunity and make it happen!

Message from the Superintendent

School safety has been a topic of interest in the State of Texas for the last several months and social media has been buzzing over the same topic. Parents, students, and community members are right to be concerned with school safety. The safety and security of our students and staff are a foundational part of what we do at Tidehaven. We have built and fostered a culture of professional relationships with our students and parents on a level of trust and care.

In the last several weeks, schools in our geographic area have faced security issues on their campuses. Those school districts were tipped off by concerned students and parents who recognized and saw something that needed to be reported to school officials. Those school officials, in turn, moved quickly to secure the school, the students and staff.

A new development at Tidehaven ISD is LokDown, an app that is being placed on every employee's phone, as well as employee computer desktops. With this new app and software program, employees can send out a variety of alerts.

1) Lockdown is an immediate threat to the lives and safety of employees and students,

2) Medical Alert is an alert that immediate medical assistance is needed,

3) Special Alert to be used when something needs to be double checked.

4) Evacuation is the final alert.

This new use of technology enables each employee and teacher to quickly alert the campus and administration to a threat and their status during the threat. This communication is immediate and updated in real time.

If you see something or hear something that you believe is a threat to the district, the campus, our students or staff, please contact the campus administration immediately. Tidehaven ISD will continue to foster a climate of safety and security for everyone.
Message from the Superintendent

Recently Governor Abbott released his School and Firearm Safety Plan which address improvements and upgrades to school safety in the light of the recent school shooting at Santa Fe High School. This plan is a public document and easily available on the internet.

Tidehaven ISD held a board workshop with the Board of Trustees on Monday, June 11, 2018, to review Governor Abbott’s plan. We discussed ways to improve school security and safety for Tidehaven ISD students and staff. There will be changes to our facilities and procedures where we find appropriate.

One specific change is as follows:

Mesh or clear backpacks will be required for the 2018-2019 school year. This will allow everyone to see what is contained or carried in each backpack. We must be able to see through the mesh or clear backpack to improve our security. Acceptable colors are any solid colors. Please no print on the mesh. This interferes with our ability to see into the backpack. These clear or mesh backpacks are easily available on Amazon starting at $14.99.

We are currently reviewing our facilities as well as our procedures. We will address and respond to security situations on our campuses as needed. We will be making changes for next year. Those changes have not been finalized, but we will share them with the parents and students prior to the start of school.

Tidehaven ISD takes the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously. We are receptive to Governor Abbott’s plan. We are partnering with the Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office, Bay City Police Department, and the Lower Colorado River Authority in our efforts to improve safety and security for everyone.

Tidehaven ISD sincerely appreciates the support of our parents and students as we seek ways to improve safety and security for everyone.

Everyone,

It has been a crazy winter here at Tidehaven and we have missed more school than usual due to late starts, early releases and just being closed due to winter weather.

The Board of Trustees approved, at last night’s meeting, to alter the school calendar for this year in order to make up the lost minutes of instruction required by the Texas Education Agency.

March 29th, May 16th and May 17th will become full days of school. Those days had been on the calendar as early release days but now they become full school days.

Tidehaven will add 30 minutes to the following school days to make up the remaining time required.

February 20th, 22nd, and 27th

March 6th, 8th, 20th, 22nd and 27th

School will dismiss at 4:00 p.m. and buses will run accordingly.

Elementary students who are normally released at 3:00 p.m. will now release at 3:30 p.m.

Buses will run 30 minutes later than normal.

Each game was exciting to watch. Highlights include beating East Bernard for the first time since 1995; then beating district rivals Boling, Schulenburg, Brazos, Danbury and Bloomington. While I am very excited about the undefeated season, I am equally excited to see the growth in leadership from these young men. Over and over again, I’ve witnessed first-hand so many of our athletes step up and aspire to better decision making. This will do them well in real-life. Now on to the playoffs. Roll TIDE! Thank you to Coach Lucio and his great coaching staff.

The 2017-2018 school year has started and it is very exciting to see. We spend all summer finalizing the budget in preparation of closing the previous budget and adopting the new budget for the next school year. Teachers have attended workshops, professional development and have made everything ready to receive the students.

On Monday, August 21, 2017 students on all the campuses were present, eager and ready to go. All the summer preparations moved into action as students started the new school year. I love the first day of school. The energy level is high, students are anxious to see what this year’s teachers and classes will offer to them.

All of our programs are built around the vision of keeping the student foremost in our thoughts, plans and actions. Our whole purpose for being is centered on the students. Without the students, nothing we do would matter. Classes such as Reading, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Sciences, Athletics, Agriculture, Fine Arts, electives, etc. would be pointless without the students.

On our very first day of school, I followed my annual tradition of visiting every single campus in the district and walking into every elementary classroom to greet the kids and visit with them for a moment. As I was at the high school/junior high campus before school, all of the students were gathering in the cafeteria. I loved seeing the kids that I hadn’t seen since the last day of school last year.

New teachers to the district add fresh faces among the faculty and staff. The quality of the new teachers is high. I’m eagerly looking forward to this year’s successes. I am looking forward to seeing the Class of 2018 graduate with distinction. I can’t wait to see what this year brings for honor and glory for Tidehaven ISD.
Spring is definitely in the air and it is a beautiful time of year at Tidehaven ISD. I just love this time of year. So many activities, so many groups and students participating, competing and performing that there is just so much to do and see. Within a three week period of time, we have seen softball, baseball, power lifting, track and field, band, One Act Play, Powerset, Ag. FFA and 4H projects, livestock shows and the county fair.

Athletics: The baseball and softball teams are doing well. Both baseball and softball have been traveling and participating in tournaments in an effort to get as many games in as possible to help our student athletes improve. The high school softball varsity team went to the championship game in the Tidehaven softball tournament and came up just short of the victory. The power lifting teams have had solid success this year. Both boys and girls power lifting teams have greater participation than ever before. The greatest progress has been with our girls’ power lifting team. The girls have finished first place and championship in four different power lifting meets. Both the boys’ and girls’ power lifting teams are sending three athletes to the state power lifting meets. The JH and HS track teams are competing across the district and doing well. I always enjoy attending the track meets and seeing our athletes compete.

Art: The high school and junior high school art students have begun the pottery portion of the year and everyone is very excited to see that. The students just love this portion of the class. The artwork and pottery they produce is really beautiful to see.

Band: High school and junior high school band programs had success this past week at UIL competition in Palacios. The JH band scored a superior rating and the HS band scored an excellent rating at competition.

One Act Play advanced out of District this past week with Persephone. The OAP district this year was extremely tough with strong OAP programs. This makes the third year in a row that our OAP has advanced out of district. Congratulations to those students!

FFA and 4-H students participated in the Matagorda County Fair and Livestock Show. Our students work with their animal and Ag. Mech projects for a significant portion of the year and this is their time to shine. I was so proud to see our students at the fair and representing the school and their families so well. Congratulations to all students who participated! Thank you also very much to the Tidehaven Youth Boosters and premium sale sponsors for your support of our students. Your generous contributions and donations are deeply appreciated.

POWERSET: girls traveled recently to the STP (Southwest Texas Project) nuclear power plant to tour the facilities, learn more about nuclear power generation and gain a better understanding of the technical side of the field and the job prospects for the future. Thank you to STP for hosting out students. They enjoyed the trip very much.

Blessing Elementary March 20th Spring program at 6:30 pm with Open House and Book Fair 5:00-6:00 p.m. with the Book Fair extending to 7:00-8:00 pm. Stuffed baked potato dinner 4:30-6:15 pm. with silent auction.

Markham Elementary Curriculum Camp Out Family Night and Book Fair will be Tuesday, March 14th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Reading and Math information sessions will be combined with Story Time and Technology sessions for everyone to enjoy. Spring music program will be March 21st at 6:30 p.m. featuring grades K-2 grade students.

For the kids,

Andrew SeigristAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14648814137732461751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8295647426381962810.post-34330752546427453832017-01-10T11:21:00.001-08:002017-01-10T11:21:42.640-08:00Message from the Superintendent January 10, 2017

This letter is being shared with the Bay City Tribune, the public, Tidehaven ISD faculty, staff and Board of Trustees.

The TEA has released preliminary A-F letter ratings for each campus and each district in the state of Texas. While an A-F system may be easy to understand from a parent and student perspective, “how” the TEA calculates each letter grades is not. Domains 1, 2, and 3 are based entirely upon how students performed on a single day of testing. Domain 4 is based upon a wide variety of criteria for the high school and narrowing down to simply the chronic absentee rate of attendance for the elementary schools.

The Texas legislature has weakened enforcement of truancy laws for all schools. Now in Domain 4, Tidehaven is being graded on students who are chronically absent from school. How can the Texas legislature take away the school district’s power to enforce truancy laws and then grade schools based upon chronic absentee rates?

For an example of how confusing the new system is, consider that Markham Elementary had an attendance rate of 96.4%. Blessing Elementary had an attendance rate of 96.8%. Under the old system Markham and Blessing both received the exact same award of distinction for “Post Secondary Readiness” in Domain 4. The exact same award. Now based upon the new Chronic Absentee standard Blessing scored an A and Markham scored a D. How is a 96.4 a D? Can you imagine your child being told, “You scored a 96.4 on the test...you get a D”?

Markham also received a distinction award for being in the top 25% in the state of Texas in “Closing the Achievement Gaps”...top 25% in the state! Congratulations, the TEA gave Markham a letter grade of C. How would the parents and students in the state of Texas react if two students in the same class received an award of distinction in the exact same assignment, however, one student is given an A while the other student is given a D? What would your reaction be if, you as a parent, were told your child performed in the top 25% of the class and received a letter grade of C?

The A-F system as designed by the TEA is flawed and misrepresents the quality of education Tidehaven is providing to our students. Do we have room for improvement? Yes, we do. Are we providing a good education for our students? We believe we are. Each year we reflect on student progress measures and look to the future to do more tomorrow than we did yesterday. That process will continue.

In all previous accountability measures, the system was designed to improve student performance. Schools had to score a certain number to meet expectations. The new system does not do that, but rather places a “bell curve” on all schools and districts. Domains 2 and 3 are calculated based upon a bell curve. Basically, a bell curve limits the number of schools able to make As and Bs regardless of how well students do on the state test. Since a bell curve is tallest in the middle, it forces the majority of schools into the middle section and the ends of the bell curve predetermine that a certain percentage of schools must be assigned a letter grade of A or F. Can you imagine if classrooms across Texas were graded based upon a “bell curve?” For instance, a class has 25 students. The teacher decides prior to completion of any assignments that at the end of the year, there will be three F’s, four D’s, eleven C’s, four B’s, and three A’s regardless of students demonstrating they have learned the material.

The TEA never released the criteria on what was required to make each grade of A, B, C, D, or F until after all tests were completed. Then, the TEA used a “bell curve” on domains 2 and 3, and divided up the letter grades. Imagine for a moment, the students in a class being given a test and only after the test is completed are the grading requirements released. Imagine.

Our school gives students multiple opportunities to show mastery of the curriculum and lessons taught. The TEA predominantly grades the school based upon how students performed on one single day, just one day. Can you imagine what students’ grades across Texas would look like if we gave them one single test and based the majority of their grade upon that one test?

At Tidehaven we are continually focused on improving instruction for our students. The faculty, staff, administration, and parents are working collaboratively to create a culture and climate of student success. We are committed to the success of our students and will continue to look for opportunities to improve.
School bond update:

Our school bond projects are all completed and we have $1.3 million dollars remaining. In 2012, Tidehaven ISD passed a $52 million dollar bond to build all new schools. Part of those plans were to build a new elementary school in both Markham and Blessing, to build a combined new junior high school and senior high school, to build a baseball/softball complex and finally to build a FEMA storm shelter that Tidehaven ISD would use for a varsity gymnasium.

Through the expert financial planning from the Tidehaven ISD Board of Trustees, the district finished those construction projects with $1.3 million dollars remaining in the bond fund. This was made possible after FEMA completed their portion of the reimbursement process.

Now the Tidehaven ISD School Board is now considering other capital improvement projects which would include: new construction, remodeling, demolition of old existing facilities, the purchase of new school buses or other capital projects for the district.

When we were having our town hall meetings in the spring of 2012, Tidehaven ISD pledged to the community that we would bring the projects to completion under budget and we have kept our word.

Because of the wise financial oversight of the Board of Trustees, now the district gains additional projects that need our attention.
The staff is unified around a clear vision. Eight teachers and staff members volunteered to serve on the Campus Improvement Team. Mrs. Garcia shared that her teachers and staff members joined together on projects for the campus. For example, all grade level math teachers decided on a Math Wall award program whereby each student has their name on an ice cream cone. As each student masters facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, a scoop of ice cream is added to their ice cream cone. Each grade level determined what was appropriate for their own grade level students, making the activity .age appropriate. The cut-outs and ideas were then given to other teachers and aides who made all the copies, cut everything out, and laminated the projects. The Blessing teachers also worked together in planning for the six-weeks. As one person shared an idea, the rest of the teaching team took that idea and improved upon it -- making a good idea even better. As I visited the campus last week, I just happened to be there at the 10:00 A.M. mark when the entire campus took a “brain break. ”The teachers and students stopped what they were doing and danced in the classroom. Research clearly shows that a brief period of physical activity stimulates the brain. Fabulous.

Students are testing on a website called Epic the AR program at Markham is completely online. This increases students’ use of technology on a regular basis. In addition, using technology regularly supports the “digital world” in which our students feel comfortable. In addition, every classroom has at least four Ipads with more on the way. Mrs. Murry and her staff are excited about technology use on the Markham campus.

The students involved in the robotics classes are using technology in analyzing data and robotic schematics. Gary Jones, high school agriculture teacher has become NCCER certified and will be offering NCCER Safety Core training and certification for high school students this year. This certification is a professional safety certification which students can immediately use upon graduation to find jobs in local plants. The high school and junior high campuses have retooled and refocused a much stronger academic vision for the use of technology in classrooms.

Welcome to the new 2016-2017 school year.

I am so very excited about this new year and the possibilities it holds. I am as excited now, this August of 2016, as I was in the summer of 2012 when we passed the school bond to build all new campuses for our students.

We have many new faces with us this year and some faces that are not new but rather returning. The energy level, enthusiasm and excitement are tangible.

Use of technology in the classrooms: Blessing and Markham Elementary Schools have done a great job of implementing and using technology in the classrooms. The elementary teachers' use of technology in the classroom has been so successful that the elementary staff hosted a technology conference at the high school. The elementary staff members shared with the JH and HS staff members many easy ways to use technology in the classrooms. The technology conference was a sterling success! Great job Blessing and Markham!

BYOD is not a new initiative for Tidehaven High School and Junior High, however we are focusing our educational efforts and use of technology in the classrooms. So many fascinating aspects have been achieved prior to this point. Three years ago, Tidehaven ISD was operating on 10 mbps of internet bandwidth. With the rapid pace at which technology changes, we found this amount of bandwidth not meeting our needs. Currently Tidehaven ISD is partnered with YK Communications and Ganado Telephone to supply 100 mbps of bandwidth. For the 2016-2017 school year, YK Communications is doubling our bandwidth to 200 mbps. Thank you YK Communications!

Free WiFi in all buildings: Tidehaven ISD is very proud to offer free WiFi to anyone inside our buildings, just as you would in the state capital in Austin, Texas. All internet and WiFi is filtered for inappropriate content and everyone's safety.

Coach David Lucio is a Tidehaven ISD graduate, and our new athletic director. He has assembled and recruited an amazing and energetic coaching staff. Our coaching staff has proven success in previous districts and we are enthusiastic about the future for Tidehaven athletics. Volleyball and Cross County have already started. Be sure to come out and support the students at their events.

Administrators and teachers have already been meeting and preparing to receive students the first day of school, Monday, August 22nd, 2016.

If you would like more information about Tidehaven ISD or how to enroll your child in Tidehaven Schools, please contact the central administration building at 979-843-4307.
